Thomasville is named for John Warwick Thomas, a man who was active in North Carolina politics as a young man. He was a state representative at the age of 30, and he was influential in promoting the development of a railroad in the county. He built the first store in the community in anticipation of the coming railroad, and the city was eventually named for him. The railroad reached Thomasville on November 9, 1855. Incorporation of the city followed in 1857.
The city’s fame for furniture began in the early years as various residents made chairs. An early factory was built in 1879, but it was destroyed by fire in 1897.
